Regional Event: Mussel Farming in New England Workshop May 17th

Mussel Farming in New England – status and opportunity updates

A workshop sponsored by Rhode Island Sea Grant, Northeastern Regional Aquaculture Center, Roger Williams University and the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory.
When: Friday May 17th 2013 12:30 – 5:00 pm
Where: Hazard Room, Coastal Institute Bldg, University of Rhode Island Bay Campus
Directions

This workshop is intended for those with practical experience working on the water and who are interested in mussel farming. Opportunities for mussel farming expansion are in offshore waters where there are fewer potential conflicts and some logistical challenges. Speakers and attendees at this workshop will share their experience with at least 4 different offshore sites in New England over the last 12 or so years. We are fortunate to have a veteran of the mussel farming industry in New Zealand give a presentation with insights into developing an industry here.

Please note: this event has not been organized by the SMP Team. To register for the workshop or for more information email or call Scott Lindell (Director, Scientific Aquaculture Program, Marine Biological Laboratory)  – slindell@mbl.edu or 508-289-7097.

Your questions and discussion are highly encouraged. We hope you will join us and send this invitation to others you think would be interested in this topic.

SMP Stakeholder Mapping Meeting: May 6th

SMP Stakeholder Mapping Meeting
Monday, May 6th, 4-6 pm
Kettle Pond Visitor Center, Charlestown

Throughout the SMP, there has been a strong request for action to address user-conflict issues among all stakeholders. In response, the SMP team has been hosting a series of meetings to document human activities within Narragansett Bay and the Coastal Ponds. The next meeting will be held on Monday, May 6th from 4-6 pm at Kettle Pond Visitor Center in Charlestown. The address and directions can be found here: http://www.visitrhodeisland.com/what-to-do/hiking/2135/kettle-pond-visitor-center/

Specifically, this meeting will give us the opportunity expand upon our understanding of how Rhode Island’s waters are used, identify user-conflicts, and further document human activities. All user information is valuable – recreational and commercial shellfishing, fin-fishing, kite surfing, boating, diving, etc. Please RSVP for this meeting to smp@etal.uri.edu, and be sure to include the meeting date.
