Eating with the Ecosystem Presents School of Fish at the Hope and Main demo kitchen.

Join local chefs to learn how to prepare local species such as “scup, herring, whiting, skate, dogfish, and sea robin” into a delicious meal.  “At Eating with the Ecosystem’s School of Fish, Rhode Island chefs will educate you on different methods for turning a whole fish-straight from the sea-into a marvelous dinner you can share with your family and friends.”

Eating with the Ecosystem will host three workshops at Hope & Main.  Each workshop includes “dinner, complete with wine and good company” at a cost of $50.

The three workshops will take place on February 22nd, March 21st, and April 25th at 6:00PM.

Education Exchange Now Accepting Applications for the Aquaculture Training Program

“The Education Exchange is now recruiting for the Aquaculture training program! The 5 week training session will prepare individuals to work in a number of positions throughout the Aquaculture industry. Participants receive training   in key employment areas such as essential job skills, basic boating skills, boating tools and maintenance, shellfish biology, dealer and shipper skills and more.”

DEM Promotes Growth of Green Economy with Latest Grant Awards

“Nearly $400,000 to be invested in small businesses to foster innovation and growth of local food and agriculture.”

“As part of its efforts to expand the green economy in Rhode Island and support working families, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) announced today the availability of $380,000 in grant funding to local small businesses under the Local Agriculture and Seafood Act (LASA) and Farm Viability programs. The grants are designed to increase the competitiveness of Rhode Island products in the marketplace and help local farmers and food partners grow their businesses.”

New Book Tells the Story of Rhode Island in Shellfish

The article in the Rhode Island Monthly reviews Sarah Schumann’s new book called Rhode Island’s Shellfish Heritage: An Ecological History.

“The book provides an illustrated guide to Rhode Island’s shellfish population, tells the story of some of the state’s well-known fishing families, describes how pollution affected the shellfish population, details the different types of quahogging equipment and even delves into the debate over chowder.”
